tHE BOOK THIEF
Recently, I read the book called “The Book Thief” published by Markus Zusak. I think this book is familiar with the most people, since it always appears in the list of recommended books. But until recently, I have just finished reading this book. I like to read the novel of science fiction, suspense and romance, thus I thought it would be boring or hard to recognize. But after finishing reading it, I found that this book is really inspiring me a lot and also makes me want to read it again and again. First, let me introduce “the Book Thief”. Its background is set in the World War II. Our main character is Liesel Meminger, a young girl lives in German governed by Nazi. The reason why the book is called “the book thief” is because Liesel has stolen 14 books in her lifetime. And all books she stole are accompanied with the growth of her and are also influenced on the people around Liesel.

The style of “The book thief” is really fresh to me. The author uses the perspective of Death to describe the character’s life and the environment at that time. Unlike other books I have read, the author didn’t let us to guess the ending, instead he advance notice the ending. Then he describes what happened in great detail. I felt confused about the content and the author’s writing style in the beginning, but carefully reading it could recognize the tale and find out its meaning. The other reason of this book is distinguished from other works is that the author uses the color to present the mood and the moment. For example, when one of the characters dies, the author writes down “It is the moment before dawn, and the sky is a 'signature black' that later turns to a charcoal - 'the blackness above is nothing but a scribble.” Therefore, as reading the part, I notice that black relates to death.
In addition, in this book, I have learned the power of the word. Hitler understood that words are power. Thus, he uses his words to make people follow him and restrict his citizens. Besides, Hitler’s publication “My Struggle” conveys racial superiority and he causes lots of the Jewish endured the persecution. On the contrary, the main character Liesel uses the power of word to sooth people’s spirits. When they are staying in the shelter, Liesel will speak the story loudly in order to calming down her neighbors. This book presents that the words have the power to destroy or save people.
The book thief is definitely worth reading.
